Building and maintaining a Finite Element Library is a time consuming affair. Finite Elements can be applied to a huge number of problems. A large variation in the number of problems Finite Elements can be used for, means that the Finite Element Library has to continuously maintained and extended. This can only be achieved by a continuous stream of funds to keep dedicated engineers working on the project. Hence donations go a long way in achieving this.
